Practice MapTelangana Protected Areas — Map & Complete List
Telangana's protected-area map splits cleanly into two very different groups — three tiny National Parks clustered around Hyderabad, all notified in the same year, and nine much larger Wildlife Sanctuaries strung along the Godavari in the north and the Krishna gorge in the south, two of which also carry Tiger Reserve status.
This is a blank practice map, not a pre-labeled reference map. Every location on it is left for you to identify and mark yourself — the facts on this page are your answer key for filling it in, exactly the way it's used for exam revision.
3 National Parks + 9 Wildlife Sanctuaries
2 Tiger Reserves: Kawal (north) & Amrabad (south)
All 3 National Parks sit around Hyderabad alone
How many National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries does Telangana have?
Three National Parks — Kasu Brahmananda Reddy, Mrugavani, and Mahavir Harina Vanasthali — all notified in 1994 and all sitting in or immediately around Hyderabad, together covering under 20 km². That's unusual: most states put their National Parks in remote wilderness, while Telangana's are effectively protected city forests. The other nine protected areas are all Wildlife Sanctuaries, a legally separate category, ranging from the 129 km² Pocharam up to the 2,611 km² Amrabad — by far the largest single block on the map.
Two of those nine sanctuaries also carry Tiger Reserve status, layered on top of (not instead of) their Wildlife Sanctuary designation: Kawal in the north, declared in 2012, and Amrabad in the south, declared in 2014 after the old Nagarjunasagar-Srisailam Tiger Reserve was split at state bifurcation. A common exam trap is treating Tiger Reserve as its own category — it isn't; both still count as Wildlife Sanctuaries, not National Parks.
How are the sanctuaries distributed across the state?
They fall into four rough clusters by river system: a northern Godavari belt (Kawal, Pranahita, Shivaram) along the Godavari and its Pranahita tributary; an eastern belt (Eturnagaram, Pakhal, Kinnerasani) in the state's densest forest cover, continuous with the Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh forests; a western Manjira belt (Manjira, Pocharam), which is unusual for being wetland/reservoir sanctuaries rather than forest ones; and Amrabad alone in the south, sitting above the Krishna gorge on the Nallamala plateau — bigger by itself than every other sanctuary on the list combined except Kawal.
