Telangana GK Map Guide
Practice MapTelangana Dams & Reservoirs — Map & Complete List
Nearly every dam in Telangana sits on one of just two river systems — the Godavari in the north and east, the Krishna in the south — so the fastest way to learn this map is by basin, not by memorising thirty separate names in no particular order.
This is a blank practice map, not a pre-labeled reference map. Every location on it is left for you to identify and mark yourself — the facts on this page are your answer key for filling it in, exactly the way it's used for exam revision.
Two basins cover almost the whole state: Godavari & Krishna
From 1563's Hussain Sagar to 2020's Kaleshwaram chain
Nagarjuna Sagar: world's tallest masonry dam, 124 m
Which basin does each major dam belong to?
Godavari basin (north & east): Sriram Sagar (Pochampad, 1977) is the lifeline of north Telangana; Sripada Yellampalli feeds Hyderabad's drinking water; Nizam Sagar (1931) and Singur sit on the Manjira tributary; and the Kaleshwaram chain — Medigadda, Annaram and Sundilla barrages feeding Mallannasagar, Kondapochamma Sagar and Ranganayaka Sagar — is the newest addition, commissioned in 2019-2020.
Krishna basin (south & west): Nagarjuna Sagar (1967) is the standout — the world's tallest masonry dam at 124 m — alongside Srisailam and Priyadarshini Jurala, both shared inter-state projects with Andhra Pradesh. Hyderabad's own lakes, Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar, are technically Krishna-basin too: they drain south via the Musi, not north into the Godavari.
What makes the Kaleshwaram reservoirs different from the older dams?
Every dam built before 2014 — Nizam Sagar, Osman Sagar, Nagarjuna Sagar, Sriram Sagar — sits directly across a river, storing water that flows into it under gravity. Kaleshwaram's reservoirs (Mallannasagar, Kondapochamma Sagar, Ranganayaka Sagar) work differently: they're lift-irrigation reservoirs, filled by pumping water uphill from the Godavari rather than damming it in place, which is exactly why they appear inland in Siddipet district, nowhere near a river on the map.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the tallest dam in Telangana?
Nagarjuna Sagar, at 124 m — also the world's tallest masonry dam, built in 1967 on the Krishna.
What is the oldest dam or reservoir in Telangana?
Hussain Sagar, built in 1563 under the Qutb Shahis — predating every other major water body on the map by over three centuries.
Why don't the Kaleshwaram reservoirs sit on a river?
Because they're lift-irrigation reservoirs, filled by pumping water uphill from the Godavari rather than storing it behind a dam built across the river — unlike every older reservoir on this map.
